Sony Interactive Entertainment, are introducing a new PlayStation Productions which will produce TV shows and films based on PlayStation IPs
According to Polygon my source of information, PlayStation are implementing a new studio to create Television shows and feature length movies based on PlayStation franchises, the studio is a new business enterprise called PlayStation Productions, Asad Qizilbash the vice president of marketing for PlayStation exclusive games and worldwide studios IP expansion at Sony Interactive Entertainment and chairman of worldwide studios at Sony Interactive Entertainment , Shawn Layden are already producing the first projects in Sony Pictures Culver City .
“We’ve got 25 years of game development experience and that’s created 25 years of great games, franchises and stories,” Layden tells The Hollywood Reporter. “We feel that now is a good time to look at other media opportunities across streaming or film or television to give our worlds life in another spectrum.”
Sony’s PlayStation division, Sony Interactive Entertainment, is bolstering efforts to bring its video game properties to film and television with a new enterprise called PlayStation Productions. According to an interview with PlayStation Productions’ leads in The Hollywood Reporter, the new PlayStation division wants to “give our worlds life in another spectrum.”
PlayStation Productions is being led by Asad Qizilbash, an 11-year veteran of Sony’s PlayStation marketing group, and overseen by Shawn Layden, chairman of SIE Worldwide Studios. The new production company will develop and produce projects internally, as opposed to licensing PlayStation properties out to external Hollywood studios, Qizilbash told The Hollywood Reporter.
Sony Pictures Studios will handle distribution of PlayStation Productions’ film and TV projects, which Qizilbash and Layden hope will give the PlayStation team time to find the right mediums and creative teams for its projects.
PlayStation titles such as Tomb Raider, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro the Dragon, Metal Gear Solid, Uncharted, God of War, The Last of Us, Ratchet & Clank and many others have grossed billions worldwide and sold millions of copies. Layden and Qizilbash see the diversity of PlayStation Productions’ library as one of its major selling points.
“We want to create an opportunity for fans of our games to have more touch points with our franchises,” says Layden. “When fans beat a 40-50 hour game and have to wait three-four years for a sequel, we want to give them places they can go and still have more of that experience and see the characters they love evolve in different ways.”
This is interesting, the scope of video game movies and TV shows are growing, with movies such as Pokémon Detective Pikachu and the Sonic the Hedgehog movie, Nintendo and Sony Interactive Entertainment are bridging the gap and ensuring video games are here to stay and should be represented in all forms of media.
