Sonic Forces – [PlayStation 4 Review]

Title of video game: Sonic Forces

System reviewed on: PlayStation 4

Publisher: SEGA

 Developer: Sonic Team

Check out some of my gameplay from Sonic Forces above.

The highly anticipated project sonic 2017 was revealed to be two IP’s from Sonic Team and SEGA In this case I will be focusing on Sonic Forces. SEGA has had a roller-coaster of time with their number one IP Sonic the Hedgehog. Sonic Forces is a fan’s dream brought to life but with a few implications. Sonic Forces is based on the devastating event that Dr. Eggman conquered during Sonic’s absence and it is up to you and your friends in the game to save the world. This game main selling point is the customisation character feature. Players will be able to create their own deviant art original character. The custom character menu gives you a lot options to choose such as

My first run results with my OC

Your original character commonly refereed by Knuckles “Rookie”. The deviant art original character is easily the most entertaining part of this game the fact that your character gets awesome gadgets to use to traverse the levels is awesome and the usability is great. Check out my original character above I call him “Scorpz” he’s a Super Saiyan Hedgehog.

With your custom character, you can designate your species and gender, I decided to go with the classic Hedgehog. Items such as T-Shirts, Hats and Knee pads and new shoes can be unlocked for your character it is also important to remember that collecting rings the gold ones and the red ones are important, so your characters’ takes less damage.

Your deviant art original character is equipped with a Wispon which is a weapon they will use throughout the level to battle Dr. Eggman’s robot minons, my two favourites are the electric whip and grappling hook. Modern Sonic also features his signature homing attack used to target the enemies and Classic Sonic has the classic old school style of his signature manoeuvre.

Sonic Forces is split into several missions with three types of levels: modern sonic levels, classic sonic levels and custom characters’ parts of the game make up this platform roleplaying game. Expect difficult boss battles and very fast paced action the boost feature can guarantee that for sure. On the other hand, the game does suffer from some negative drawbacks such as poor level design. A lot of the levels are very cluttered with unnecessary assets and sometimes the levels are too short and easy. The boss battles are also too much in my opinion and very disorganised and all over the place. The story could do with some work too. I mean Dr Eggman has in a way conquered the world so what else could want? I guess we all have to complete the game to find out.

In conclusion, Sonic Forces generally is a memorable video game it has a lot to offer to the hardcore Sonic fan and novice. The game has a lot of the legacy characters returning such as: Tails “Miles” Prower, Knuckles the Echidna, Silver the Hedgehog, Amy the Hedgehog, Vector the Crocodile, Espio the Chameleon, Charmy the Bee etch, the game feels like a reunion even though they are all fighting on the brink of war against Dr. Eggman and the dangerous Infinite, I recommend picking this title up if you want to play a new type of Modern Sonic video game it is its pros and cons but overall is a good game.

  1. Character customisation options
  2. The Boost mode increasing the fast paced action
  3. The different game modes ( a. Modern Sonic, b. Customised Character, c. Classic Sonic)
  4. The awesome rock music
  5. Naruto power of friendship type feeling from all the classic characters working together

  1. The level designs very cluttered
  2. Boss are unnecessarily  difficult
  3. Inconsistent story
  4. Stages too short
  5. Sometimes this game is frustrating to play

    1. Awesome man the game was pretty good but definitely had it’s faults IMO we didn’t need classic sonic in this game and the levels should’ve been a lot longer also I’m disappointed we didn’t get to play as Silver the Hedgehog but overall it is entertaining how many times did it take you to complete the 3 bosses ?

      1. Yeah I felt it could have expanded more but I do love the song. It would have been better to leave Classic Sonic in Mania and just focus on Modern Sonic. I didn’t like how Sega decided to change the fact instead of having Classic Sonic come from the past, they decided to say he is from another dimension. Silver would be fun and I wish we could play as him again. I think it only took me 2 or 3 times. The 3 boss fights was long.
