Death Note 2017 Netflix [Movie Review]

Netflix finally released the long awaited anime movie which is the American version of the popular and well known anime Death Note written by Tsugumi Ohba and illustrated by Takeshi Obata published by Viz Media and adapted my Madhouse .

The movie reminded of Chronicle (2012). An edgy teenager who was a victim of abuse from bullies and injustice had acquired a new power to exact his revenge and twisted version of Justice. Everyone knows that this film is based off an anime but it just uses the characters and prop of the notebook that kills people. This film was an average attempt at making an Americanised Death Note.

Death Note has had multiple live action adaptions in Japan. Don’t begin this movie expecting this to be exactly like the anime or manga because it’s not there are subtle changes that make this seem like a standalone horror/thriller/Gore movie.

For instance, the way the some of the victims die is truly gruesome. The film is based around a high school student who seems to be intelligent but a lone wolf he discovers a black notebook and then meets a Death God that grants him the power to kill.

The characters have all changed significantly in this version for instance Light Yagami is called Light Turner and L is African American and Misa Asane is called Mia Sutton. The movie has a straight forward plot a man finds a book with supernatural powers and meets a Death God and has the power to cause major fatalities in the name of “KIRA” but is found out by one of the best detectives.

The Death Note Netflix film is a gory thriller American flick, the director Adam Wingward directed an interesting type of movie, I feel like as a standalone film it would get a lot of praise but since it is based off the anime Death Note a lot of people are quick to ridicule this film not me. It has its pros and cons which I list below but overall is entertaining and dark and has an intelligent plot twists.

This is the American Death Note, and it is worth the watch if you saw the original anime and even if you haven’t you will enjoy this movie. This movie displays what could happen when someone is granted with the power to kill, surely this power corrupts right  ?, Death Note Netflix ladies and gentlemen.
